IPL 2023 Live Report - Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai

By Shashank Kishore

Century for Green; Mumbai are home

Green fittingly hits the winning runs that also bring him a stunning hundred off just 47 balls as Mumbai win with 12 balls to spare. This also knocks the Rajasthan Royals out of contention.
It's now over to the RCB-Titans fixture to see who joins GT, CSK and LSG in the playoffs.
A Titans win means a ticket for Mumbai
An RCB win means a knockout for Mumbai
A washout means Mumbai will swim through

Umran Malik is all pace but has a lot of work to do on his accuracy. In top gear, the pace just feeds Green and Surya as they pick him effortlessly.
Full ball: drilled down town
Short on off: Slapped over deep point
Short and wide: Flat-batted through the off side.
From 41 off 30, it's down to 21 off 24.

Rohit's landmark

The number of runs Rohit has in T20 cricket as he pumps Umran Malik down the ground.
Rohit had a second reprieve by Sanvir on 51 but has perished to Mayank Dagar. Nitish Reddy who was denied a maiden IPL wicket, of Rohit, earlier in the innings has taken a blinder at point. But the feeling is Mumbai are walking home here. Those thoughts are further strengthened when Suryakumar Yadav comes in and effortlessly goes inside-out first ball for four.

Vivrant taken to the cleaners

His first IPL over is a forgettable one as Rohit and Green muscle him over the ropes for two massive hits. The over goes for 19 and momentum is firmly in Mumbai's favour as they breach the 100-run mark. Green's brought up his half-century off just 20 balls. Mumbai 100/1 in nine overs.

The sixth goes for 18. The extra ball courtesy the no-ball produces a boundary. Cam Green is batting like a bullet train. Four fours, two sixes off his first 10 balls. Mumbai Indians 60/1 in six overs

What these blocks of deliveries won't tell you is Nitish Reddy should've had Rohit Sharma. Deceived him with a slower delivery off the fifth ball of his second over that Rohit tried to hoick but completely miscued. Sanvir Singh, running back from midwicket, couldn't hold on as he lost balance. To add insult to injury, the last ball of the over muscled for six by Cam Green.
That's the difference between your figures reading 2-0-12-1 and 2-0-19-0.

Kishan falls to Bhuvneshwar

It's proving to be difficult to hit off deliveries bowled into the pitch. Bhuvneshwar Kumar exploits that with a superb knuckleball that Ishan Kishan toe-ends to midwicket. The wicket actually should belong to Harry Brook who made the catch possible, though. He covered superb ground running backwards and diagonally to his left before putting in a full-length dive to complete the catch. Mumbai 24/1 in three overs.

Mumbai with momentum

Markram muscles the last ball for six as Sunrisers cross 200, something they looked like doing way earlier. From 158 for 1 in 15 overs, Mumbai have limited damage and will chase 201 to keep their playoff hopes alive. Akash Madhwal was particularly impressive in the death overs, picking up four wickets. Just two fours and a six in the last four overs of the innings.

First Jordan. Then Madhwal.
Suddenly from looking like getting 220, it appears as if Sunrisers may have to settle for 25 runs fewer. Just the one boundary so far between overs 17-19.

Agarwal falls but Sunrisers eye 200 plus

He was on 35 off 24 at 10 overs.
He then surged to 83 off 45 with SRH 174/2 in 16.4 overs.
Akash Madhwa gets him nicking as he digs one in from around the stumps. Agarwal’s attempt at fetching one from way outside off results in a thin edge to the keeper.

I'm in it, too, says Agarwal. Begins the over with a lofted hit for six over extra cover and then scythes a wide yorker for four to bring up his fifty off 32 balls. The over goes for 19. Sunrisers 131/0 in 13 overs.

Maiden IPL fifty for Vivrant

Brings it up off 36 balls. It's his first outing with the bat; isn't his debut though. The two boundaries he picked off Jordan in the 10th over helped him get there quickly. The second of those boundaries was a thick inside edge that flew past leg stump for four.

Vivrant gives Chawla the charge

Two bludgeoning hits down the ground to end the powerplay. Sunrisers 53/0. Vivrant has overcome a slow start to move to 27 off 24 and is beginning to shift gears. The slowdown hasn't been due to lack of trying, though. It's possibly just a case of nerves and a few good shots finding the fielders. Mayank Agarwal increasingly looking good too.
Overs 3-6 have all produced two boundaries each.

Agarwal earns a reprieve

Both batters were nearly at one end. Non-striker Vivrant immediately ran as Agarwal steered one to backward point. It meant Agarwal had no option but to run. Surya, who had all the time in the world to aim and shoot, missed a direct hit at the bowler's end. Agarwal had resigned to fate. Lucky break on 15. Can he make Mumbai pay? Sunrisers 43/0 in 5 overs.

Who is Vivrant Sharma?

Last year, he was a net bowler with Sunrisers, an opportunity he got thanks to Abdul Samad's endorsement. It was there, during a training session, where reserve players were range hitting, that Vivrant gave glimpses of his big-hitting abilities.
Prior to this year's auction, he provided further proof of his abilities during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy domestic T20s in October, when he made 128 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 145.45. There was one particular knock, against Karnataka, that he picks out as a turning point.
In a chase of 148 on a sluggish surface, Vivrant found himself batting with the lower order as J&K sank to 31 for 6. Vivrant launched a fierce counterattack to make a 46-ball 63 with six fours and two sixes. J&K lost the game, but Vivrant had made a mark. That had Sunrisers fiercely bidding for him.
Here's his opportunity to make a mark at the top of the order.

What's in it for Rajasthan Royals?

They'd be hoping both Mumbai and RCB lose. This will mean all of Royals, RCB and MI end tied on 14 points.
It will then come down to a net run rate shootout between RCB and Royals, with MI knocked out.
Here's what Royals would need from Titans:
If RCB bat first and score 180, Royals need Titans to chase down the target in 19.3 overs or before.
If RCB field first and concede 180, Royals need Titans to restrict RCB to 174 or less.
If the margins of RCB's loss are tighter than that, then they will go through with a better NRR.

Mumbai not looking at equations

"Just looking to win, not looking at how we should win. At least winning will give us a chance," says Rohit Sharma as he elects to chase
This much is clear. Mumbai just want the two points and then hope for a big favour from Hardik Pandya's Titans or the Bengaluru rain later tonight.
Wholesome changes for Sunrisers. Mayank Agarwal is back after being left out for a bunch of games in the second half. He'll have a new opening partner in young J&K allrounder Vivrant Sharma. Sanvir Singh and Nitish Reddy get another crack.
Mumbai bring in Kumar Kartikeya for Hrithik Shokeen. No Tilak Varma yet, he continues to sit out due to a niggle.
Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (capt), Ishan Kishan (wk), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, Nehal Wadhera, Chris Jordan, Piyush Chawla, Jason Behrendorff, Kumar Kartikeya, Akash Madhwal
Impact Subs: Ramandeep Singh, Vishnu Vinod. Tristan Stubbs, Tilak Varma, Sandeep Warrier
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Mayank Agarwal, Vivrant Sharma, Aiden Markram (capt), Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Harry Brook, Nitish Reddy, Glenn Phillips, Sanvir Singh, Mayank Dagar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umran Malik

Will a win be enough for Mumbai Indians?

It will be enough only if RCB lose to Gujarat Titans this evening.
Mumbai can surge ahead of RCB on net run rate if they win by 79 runs or more.
Even if that happens, RCB have the advantage of knowing what they should do.
It raises the big moot point:
Should the final day matches be played simultaneously? Great for the league; not so great for the broadcasters.
