The long-term understudy of Darren Berry, Peter Roach got an extended opportunity in 2004-05 but was replaced by the young Adam Crosthwaite. Roach played seven Pura Cup matches and struggled to contribute with the bat, adding another chapter to his struggles to play state cricket. Roach had an excellent junior career and was in the Australia Under-17 team in the early 1990s and then toured India with the national under-19 team in 1994. He attended the Academy in 1995 and in the next season gained promotion to Victoria's senior team for the first time - at the shock expense of Berry amid a turbulent summer for the Bushrangers. In scoring confident half-centuries in each of his opening two first-class matches, he created an immediate impression during a ten-match stay. From there, though, only a handful of further interstate matches followed.
