Percy Herbert, a decent club cricketer, was given a chance to play first-class cricket by his nephew, Percy Fender. The game was a benefit match (for JJ Reid, the pavilion attendant) between Gentlemen of the South and Players of the South in July 1920. The first day's play was over - Players had made 551 for 9 - when Fender summoned his uncle to make up the number as the Gentlemen were short (they had used substitutes when fielding). Herbert sat in the pavilion and watched it rain throughout the second and third day. Herbert thus has the distinction of not only never taking the field through his first-class career, but also not even having seen a ball bowled.
