A middle-order batsman who bowled bustling medium pace, Arvind Kandappah was born in Colombo but played cricket in his formative years in Chennai. When he was 12, Kandappah moved to India with the civil war back home in Sri Lanka at its peak. He then enrolled at St. Michael's Academy for his schooling, primarily to further his cricket. By his late teens Kandappah was playing for the Madras Cricket Club in the competitive Chennai leagues and then, as he pursued a degree in Economics at the Loyola College, he represented Tamil Nadu Colts. However, a move back to Colombo in 1993, and a shift in focus to a career as a banker meant that cricket took a backseat although he still turned out for Tamil Union. When work took Kandappah to Canada he began to play club cricket regularly, and this culminated in him being picked to play for Canada in an ODI series against Kenya in 2007, at the age of 36. Kandappah top scored with an unbeaten 69 including three sixes in the first game, and made 28 in the next, both of which Canada lost.
