New Zealand v West Indies
Richard Hobson
15-Apr-2005
At Southampton, July 8. No result (abandoned). New Zealand 3 pts, West Indies 3 pts. Toss: West
Indies. One-day international debut: D. J. G. Sammy.
With both sides assured of contesting the final, and heavy rain in the air, there was a subdued
atmosphere around the Rose Bowl even when the umpires decreed a 4.30 p.m. start. At 4.29, rain
broke through again, this time with terminal effect. A day later, the ICC confirmed their recent
ruling that, because the captains had tossed, the game would count towards the records. Darren
Sammy thus became the first player from St Lucia to represent West Indies - even though there
was no play.
