India v Australia 2007-08

A match report of India v Australia 2007-08

15-Apr-2008
At Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, October 17, 2007 (day/night). India won by two wickets. Toss: Australia.
Murali Kartik proved the unlikeliest of heroes as India pulled back a consolation victory. On a track with a bit of bounce, Kartik - a doubtful starter with a badly bruised thumb - picked up six for 27, the best figures by a slow left-armer in one-day internationals (beating Sanath Jayasuriya's six for 29 against England at Moratuwa in 1992-93) as Australia were bowled out for 193. It was a delicate and engaging spell of spin bowling at its wily best, and only the wicket of Symonds - caught at cover off a short ball - came as a result of an indiscreet shot. But then India slumped to 64 for six with their top order freezing against Johnson and Bracken. A refreshingly fluent and punchy 47 from Uthappa put them back on track, but he could not finish things off, and when the ninth-wicket pair came together with 51 needed off 14.2 overs, Australia were still favourites. But Kartik and Zaheer Khan inched India home in a nervy finish, slashing, steering and edging their way to a victory finally reached with four leg-byes off Johnson. It was the first time India had beaten Australia batting second since April 1998.
Man of the Match: M. Kartik. Man of the Series: A. Symonds.
