England v Sri Lanka in England, 2011

Wisden's review of the second ODI, England v Sri Lanka in England, 2011

15-Apr-2012
At Leeds, July 1. Sri Lanka won by 69 runs. Toss: England.
If a sunny day in Leeds proved the perfect antidote for Sri Lanka after the cold of south London, no one warmed more elegantly to the task than Jayawardene. His classy 144 was the highest of his 15 one-day international hundreds, while his stand of 159 with Sangakkara - a Sri Lankan record for the third wicket against (and in) England - repaired the loss of two early run-outs after Cook had opted to field first on a Headingley belter. Had Swann held a tough chance at slip off Bresnan when Jayawardene had seven, things might have been different, but England's bowlers did not claim a wicket until the 39th over, and their last ten leaked 97. The wicketless Broad swore at umpire Bowden following a rejected lbw appeal, and was fined half his match fee. Needing to pull off their highest successful one-day run-chase, England began aggressively until the demise of Kieswetter robbed them of momentum; Cook and Trott managed only 32 in 44 balls together. Morgan upped the ante with successive sixes off Mendis over midwicket in a 37-ball fifty. But when he was stumped, with 109 still needed, England's hopes soon faded.
Man of the Match: D. P. M. D. Jayawardene. Attendance: 16,326.
