ENGLAND v CANADA

At Manchester, June 13, 14

15-Apr-1980
At Manchester, June 13, 14. England won by eight wickets after Canada won the toss and decided to bat. Heavy rain caused the umpires to abandon any hope of cricket on the first day. More bad weather interrupted the second day and made the conditions somewhat farcical. The start was held up for the first hour, and then with Dennis alone reaching double figures Canada were routed for 45. Willis and Old were almost unplayable and Hendrick conceded only 5 runs in eight overs. A heavy storm delayed England"s reply between 3.30 and 7.00 p.m., and then bright sunshine prevailed. Valentine, the left-arm pace bowler, having accounted for Majid Khan the previous Saturday, now trapped Brearley leg before for 0 and Randall also went cheaply, but Boycott and the enterprising Gooch soon hit off the runs. Old received the Man of the Match award.
