Edwards and Guha the stars as England clinch series

England's women's team wrapped up their five-match series against New Zealand, the world champions, with a comfortable 38-run victory at Derby. England now lead the series 3-1, with one match to play, at Old Trafford on Tuesday (August 17).

England finished with 197 for 7 in their 50 overs, thanks mainly to half-centuries from Charlotte Edwards and their captain Clare Connor, then restricted New Zealand to 159 for 9, with Isa Guha, the bustling medium-pacer, taking career-best figures of 5 for 22.

Edwards, who first played for England in 1996 but is still only 24, passed 2000 runs in ODIs during her 70, which came from 108 balls and included seven fours. She put on 44 for the first wicket with Laura Newton (21), then dominated a third-wicket stand of 86 with Connor before chipping Nicola Browne to Aimee Mason (135 for 3).

Connor then took charge, shrugging off regular wickets at the other end. Laura Greenway (8), Rosalie Birch (7), Nicki Shaw (2) and Jenny Gunn (7) all came and went, but Connor hung on, finishing with 56 not out from 106 balls, an innings that contained just the one boundary.

New Zealand were never on terms when they batted, losing wickets at regular intervals. Lucy Pearson whistled through her 10 overs for 20 runs, and although New Zealand briefly threatened when Browne and Haidee Tiffen put on 66 for the fifth wicket, that was ended when Birch had Browne caught for 29.

Guha, 19, then claimed her third wicket, sending back Tiffen for a solid 48 - again containing only one four - and then all but sealed the match by dismissing Mason and Sara McGlashan to complete her first five-wicket haul in an ODI.
