AUSTRALIA v. WEST INDIES

At Sydney January 3, 4, 5, 7, 8. Australia won by ten wickets. They kept the side which won at Melbourne while the West Indies brought in Lloyd and Hall for Camacho and Davis. The pattern of the previous Test was, however, faithfully repeated after the West Indies had won the right to bat on a fine wicket and the game ended early on the fifth day. Once again there was no spine to the West Indies' batting and Sobers and Lloyd were the only two who looked as if they might take the West Indies to a big score on the first day. The wickets fell mostly to the three fast bowlers, who got some pace out of the wicket and took advantage of some poor batting.

Australia were given a sound start by Lawry and Stackpole, who had changed places with Redpath in the order, and the advantage was rubbed in by Redpath and Walters. Chappell failed, making only 33, but Walters' form was much improved and Redpath played an innings full of glorious strokes. Walters batted three and a half hours, hitting twelve 4's. The innings was given a final boost by a robust innings from Freeman, who was helped in a last-wicket stand of 73 by Connolly.

Australia led by 283 and left themselves with more than two days to bowl out their opponents. There was rather more purpose to the West Indies' batting this time, although Sobers persisted in batting at number six when a player of his ability should have gone in earlier to set the example and to remove some of the pressure. Butcher, in determined mood, made 101 in just over four hours, but otherwise no one passed fifty.
