Ali Orr made an immediate impact after being given a first-class debut in 2021, scoring a century opening the batting in his third Sussex appearance, against Kent at Canterbury. Orr, an academy product who had been with the club since the age of 10, averaged 39.14 in his first season in the Championship team and enjoyed even better returns the following summer. He passed 1000 runs for the season in his final innings, a coruscating 198 off 174 balls after Sussex were made to follow on against Glamorgan. His talent was evident in limited-overs cricket, too, as he thrashed 206 off 161 balls - the highest List A score by a Sussex player - against Somerset in the Royal London Cup.

Orr, however, struggled with injury in 2023 and only played eight times in the Championship and twice in the Blast, scoring one half-century. There were also reports of a falling out with Sussex's new head coach, Paul Fabrace, and when negotiations over a new contract broke down, he took the opportunity to sign with Hampshire.
